Social Experiment

 Photo / 1

The biggest craze since the industrial revolution is social media.  It's no wonder that as a society, we are "addicted" to social media and often feel like we need to unplug. In the beginning it might have been a few
sites like MySpace, AIM and Xanga that caught our attention, but now there's thousands all competing for our undivided attention. It starts from the moment we wake up, until the second we fall asleep. We have the need to constantly check our Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, Instagram and hundreds of other social media sites, making it extremely difficult to unplug.

Weather or not it's an actual medical "addiction", people are feeling the need to take a break and disconnect from the hectic world of social media. Kiran Khalid, a producer for CNN admitted her constant habit of obsessively checking her personal social media sites. She decided to run an experiment and disconnect from all electronic communication during her five-day vacation. The first few days were the hardest when she was tempted to sneak in a Tweet or post a picture to Instagram but she managed to hold off the urge. By the third day she cheated a little bit and wrote a quick email to a few of her closest friends but instantly felt guilty afterwards which made day 4 and 5 easier to stay away from her electronics. During her experiment she realized the more she focused her time and energy on the things in front of her, the less she felt the need to constantly update her personal sites.

  1. I think it is really becoming a problem that many people in our generation can not go without social media. This experiment is one that I think everyone should try at least once to see if they can go without these outlets.
